A Fun Day With the Grandchildren at Mount Vernon

320px-MTVernonseenfromtheriverEvery grandparent knows that the grandchildren LOVE to go and visit places.  But they may not know how much we enjoy to explore with them parks and historical sites. Visit a historical park and you will be in grandparent company.

Nearly 60% of grandparents travel with their grandchildren: day trips or longer travel tours. And summer time is high season of grandparent travel with the kids.

It was a beautiful warm day. On short notice Ally and Alissa packed lunch for the three of us and off we drove to explore a living-history plantation: Mount Vernon in Alexandria, VA, the home of George Washington for over 40 years during the mid 1700s.  It is close to Washington, DC – our Capital everyone wishes to visit at least once.

The Mount Vernon Plantation is one of the fun living history and educational sites anyone enjoys. But the most enjoyable moments are when the kids get very excited and a light bulb goes off: “Oh, my teacher said that George Washington loved his gardens” while we explored nearly every corner of the magnificently preserved plantation with gardens of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Rolling hills of luscious pastures with grazing cows, sheep, chicken and horses with sections of forest land unfold along the Potomac river bank.

You may find interesting and historical sites in your area. Michael Schuman in Grandparents magazine offered a variety of vacation ideas for day-trips of living history sites or longer travel kids would love to explore with you.

You will enjoy Elizabeth Cottrell’s wonderful post, Happy Birthday To Our National Parks! She offers suggestions, updated information on cost-savings of our national parks throughout the United States.

Have a fun outing with your grandkids! And you and I know that we grandparents have even more fun!
